Hello, everyone! Welcome to a new term of strange and nerdy shenanigans with the Sci-Fi & Fantasy Society! I’m the President, Hannah, and I’ll be the one posting announcements every Sunday. They will keep you updated on our events and socials, and other things I think deserve your attention. Hope to see you all at some point in the next two weeks!

FILM NIGHT – The Shape of Water, Monday 1st October, 18:00 – 21:00, Pearson G22
Do you love Beauty and the Beast but also hate SeaWorld?
Boy, have we got a film for you.

BOARD GAMES, Wednesday 3rd October, 18:00 – 21:00, Foster Court 243
Come join us for our first board game evening of the term!
Never heard of Settlers of Catan? Or play Twilight Imperium on the regular? Either way, feel free to come along; from rookie to veteran, all levels of board game experience are welcome. A selection of the society’s library will be available to play, with committee members available to demo or provide rules explanations as needed.
Afterwards, feel free to join us at the IOE bar for post game trash talk (alcohol not mandatory)

RPG ONE-SHOTS, Thursday 4th October, 18:00 – 21:00, Institute of Education Lobby
Ever dreamed of being a wizard? An orc? Buffy the Vampire slayer?
A werewolf? Now’s your chance.
A selection of individuals from our society will be running taster sessions to introduce you to the world of RPGs. These will cover a variety of roleplaying games from Dungeons & Dragons to Fiasco to Paranoia.
Whether you haven’t heard of a dungeon nor a dragon or are an experienced player looking for new people to talk Owlbears with or make your own group, come on and try it out!

BOOK CLUB, Friday 5th October, 18:00 – 20:00, Dillon’s Coffee (in Gower Street Waterstones)
Welcome to SFFS book club, a brand new event where we discuss sci-fi and fantasy literature! We’ll be starting off with a short story, Ted Chiang’s ‘Story of Your Life’.
Narrated by a linguistics professor tasked with deciphering an alien language. The sci-fi story that formed the basis of the 2016 film ‘Arrival’. For those who have watched the film, we will be discussing the narrative, themes and how the film works as an adaptation, but the focus will be on the short story.

GEEK TOUR, Saturday 6th October, 12:00 – 17:00, UCL Main Quad
For many of you it’s your first couple of weeks in London, and we figured that it might be nice to give all of you a tour of the various geeky highlights that aren’t on other London tours. From merch stores to comic book stores to specialist game stores, we will give you the geeks eye-view to London that only SFFS can provide.

FILM NIGHT – Space Jam, Monday 8th October, 18:00 – 21:00, IOE 804
Bugs Bunny? Michael Jordan? According to my focus group, kids love both those things. Add in a meme-worthy soundtrack, significant product placement and an uncomfortably gender-swapped Bugs Bunny and what can go wrong?
A lot.

RPS TOURNAMENT, Tuesday 9th October, 18:00 – 21:00, IOE 739
Anybody want to prove to their friends that they’re the Michael Jordan of Rock, Paper, Scissors?
Anybody love the theatrics of the WWE but hate the actual athleticism?
Anybody want to prove to their friends that their time-tested strategy of “Always Go For Rock” never fails?
We have the event for you.
This night and this night only, we have THREE official UCL SFFS Championships up for grabs. THE SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP, the TAG TEAM and the NO HOLDS BARRED BELTS are ALL ON THE LINE!

BOARD GAMES, Wednesday 10th October, 18:00 – 21:00, Gordon House 308
