Heyo! We’ve got a busy week leading into reading week and I hope y’all are surviving your deadlines.

Fun side note: I’m aware that a lot of members are unaware that the society actually has a library for members to borrow books from (https://www.dropbox.com/…/SFFS-Book-Library-Catalogue-2018-…), if you’d like to borrow a book, just drop a message to Secretary Andrea.

Reminder that you have until this Wednesday to email in your opinions on board game sales (see last email/post for more info).

ALSO, nominations for committee positions are opening on Feb 25th so please consider if you’d like to run!

A Message About Boardgames Sales and Purchases

Hey! If you weren’t there yesterday at Boardgames, you missed our exciting announcement about the new games we are purchasing for the society (thanks, Zatu!):

  • Flamme Rouge
  • Sushi Go Party
  • Colt Express
  • Ticket to Ride: New York
  • Millenium Blades
  • Santorini
  • Sagrada
  • Arkham Horror 3rd. Edition
  • Arboretum

And now onto boardgame sales
The committee is planning on selling these games below. If you have a good and valid argument as to why we should keep a game over selling it to a member of the society, please present your case (you can send it to su-scifi.society@ucl.ac.uk), we will take your opinions and arguments into consideration when making our final decisions. YOU HAVE UNTIL WEDS 6 FEB TO PRESENT YOUR ARGUMENT.

  • Bang!
  • Battlestar Galactica: The Board Game (+Daybreak, Exodus, Pegasus Expansions)
  • Dominion (+Intrigue)
  • Eldritch Horror
  • Forbidden Desert
  • Fury of Dracula
  • Sanguosha

Sadly the society’s storage space is finite and in order to make space for some fresh and exciting boardgames we have to let go of some other games. These games are not necessarily games we think are bad, more likely we are selling them because they simply don’t get played often enough (or at all) to justify their room and board, or because we own other games that pull off similar things in a better (or more fun) way.

Some Exciting, Important Info

Several exciting things this week!
Firstly: Our new sponsor!

We are excited to announce that our society is now being sponsored by Zatu Games! Many of you boardgame aficionados will be familiar with the online merchant of board games, card games, collectibles and more. They offer very competitive pricing on a selection of over 13,000 different board games and collectables. Thanks to Zatu, the society is able to purchase new board games at trade prices, and we’ll soon be able to provide you all with discount codes to use too! (You can find out more about Zatu here: https://www.board-game.co.uk/)

Next: Elections!
This year, rather than electing committee positions at the AGM, we will be running online elections for all our committee roles (President, Treasurer, Secretary, Boardgames Officer, RPG Officer, Events Officer, and Webmaster). Nominations will open 25th February, so please start considering if you’d like to run for a committee position. More details soon.

BOOK CLUB, Friday 7th December, 18:00 – 20:00, Dillon’s Coffee (in Gower Street Waterstones)
This week we’ll be reading “CONTINUE? Y/N”, a short story by Kendra Fortmeyer about a flower girl in a video game who refuses to remain a non-player character. http://the-toast.net/2015/05/04/continue-yn-a-short-story/
If you would like to suggest a short story for us to read the following week or a book for us to start discussing at the beginning of term 2, you may do so by joining our Facebook group (UCL SFFS Book Club) at https://www.facebook.com/groups/302088553716628/?fref=nf and commenting on the relevant suggestion post. After suggestions are in, there will be a Facebook poll to decide what to read.
Suggestions close and the poll opens on Friday the 7th at 3pm. Voting closes on Sunday 9th at 3pm.
