I hope everyone’s looking forward to the spooky week ahead of us!

Also, don’t forget to purchase membership if you haven’t already!

1. EVENTS THIS WEEK
FILM NIGHT Halloween, Monday 29th October, 18:00 – 21:00, Medical Sciences G46 (H O Schild Pharmacology LT)
I know the remake-quel is out in theatres, but here in Sci-Fi & Fantasy Society we like to keep it OG. By which I mean, the new sequel which is also a remake, and not the original sequel, released in 1978, the original remake of the sequel, released in 1998, or the original remake, released in 2007 or the remake sequel, released in 2009. Or the six additional films released in the interim period with various chronologies, timelines and genuinely the most confusing naming in Hollywood. Anyway, the main takeaway out of this is this film does not contain Busta Rhymes.

Every Monday during term we watch a film as a society. This week, we’re watching John Carpenter’s classic and the greatest slasher film of all-time, Halloween, due to the upcoming holiday named after this film.

BOARD GAMES, Wednesday 31st October, 18:00 – 21:00, Anatomy B15
Come along to our weekly boardgames sessions; from rookie to veteran, all levels of board game experience are welcome.
If you’d like to play a specific boardgame on the night, be sure to request it from Jo Winter! Just check here for the list of boardgames we own: https://boardgamegeek.com/collection/user/uclsffs…

BOOK CLUB, Friday 2nd November, 18:00 – 20:00, Dillon’s Coffee (in Gower Street Waterstones)
This week we’ll be reading “Understand”, a short story about a regular person gaining heightened intelligence and an imagining of what that feels like.
https://royallib.com/read/Chiang_Ted/Understand.html
(Story starts at ‘A layer of ice…’ paragraph 4)

Announcement: In two weeks’ time and over several weeks we’ll be discussing “Neuromancer” by William Gibson. This is a full-length novel that interested members will have to procure for themselves. The book has defined cyberpunk and is a dark, dystopian sci-fi story about a hacker doing one last job for a mysterious employer.

ALL DAY BOARDGAMES, Saturday 3rd November, 12:00 – 21:00, Chadwick G07
Boardgames all day! This will be the chance to play some of those longer games that can’t be contained within three hours. Feel free to drop in or leave at any time throughout the day. Just know that it will be our Halloween celebration, so come dressed in your best spooky regalia and join us for karaoke at Mully’s Basement Bar afterwards!

2. UPCOMING EVENTS
“FILM” NIGHT The Simpsons Marathon, Monday 5th November, 17:00 – 21:00, Pearson G22

DM CRASH COURSE, Sunday 11th November, 12:00 – 17:00, IOE W2.06

Onwards to week 4 of events!

I’m going to remind you all that if you’re coming to this week’s events, please make sure that you’ve purchased society membership (you can do so here). If it’s your first time attending our events then don’t worry too much about it, but otherwise please do buy membership!

Those of you who came to the pub quiz on Thursday may have noticed the nifty whiteboards we used, and as a matter of fact they are now part of the society’s RPG inventory. If you ever want to borrow them or anything else in the RPG inventory just contact RPG Officer Logan Forth: https://www.dropbox.com/…/SFFS-RPG-Library-Catalogue-2018-2…
If you want to borrow any of the many books in our library, contact Secretary Andrea Petrou: https://www.dropbox.com/…/SFFS-Book-Library-Catalogue-2018-…
And, if you ever want to borrow a boardgame, contact Boardgames Officer Jo Winter.

A final note, if you ever need a room for a small event (with other paying members of society), such as an RPG session, just send me (Hannah Okumura Jones) a message and I can try to book a room for you.

1. EVENTS THIS WEEK
FILM NIGHT Truth or Dare, Monday 22nd October, 18:00 – 21:00, Medical Sciences G46 (H O Schild Pharmacology LT)
Films based on video games? Horrible
Films based on board games? Even worse
Films based on party games? I guess it’s in the public domain.
Every Monday during term we watch a film as a society. The second in our three film Horror Movie trilogy (Thrillogy?) is so-bad-it’s-laughable film Truth of Dare? Based on the party game of the same name.

If you enjoy the game, you may enjoy the film?

BOARD GAMES, Wednesday 24th October, 18:00 – 21:00, Foster Court 215
Come along to our weekly boardgames sessions; from rookie to veteran, all levels of board game experience are welcome.
If you’d like to play a specific boardgame on the night, be sure to request it from Jo Winter! Just check here for the list of boardgames we own: https://boardgamegeek.com/collection/user/uclsffs…

BOOK CLUB, Friday 26th October, 18:00 – 20:00, Dillon’s Coffee (in Gower Street Waterstones)

http://engl210-deykute.wikispaces.umb.edu/f…/view/omelas.pdf

MURDER MYSTERY, Saturday 27th October, 14:00 – 18:00, Chadwick 2.18

1. EVENTS THIS WEEK
FILM NIGHT The Conjuring 2, Monday 15th October, 18:00 – 21:00, Chadwick B05
Ghosts? Demons? Creepy Nuns? We start our trilogy of October Horror Movie film nights where we try to uncover the spookiest thing of them all – the end of the Piccadilly line.
Every Monday during term we watch a film as a society. The film we’re showing this week is James Wan’s masterpiece in Horror “The Conjuring 2”. You do not need to see the first one to understand this one.

BOARD GAMES, Wednesday 17th October, 18:00 – 21:00, Foster Court 215
Come along to our weekly boardgames sessions; from rookie to veteran, all levels of board game experience are welcome.
If you’d like to play a specific boardgame on the night, be sure to request it from Jo Winter!

PUB QUIZ, Thursday 18th October, 19:00 – 21:30, IOE W2.05
Think of yourself an expert in The Lord of the Rings? How about a savant at The Simpsons? An obsessive Potterhead who couldn’t sleep without the soothing voice of Jim Dale?
Whether you are an authority on Douglas Adams or if you can’t differentiate your Tony from your Robb Starks, give the UCL Sci-Fi and Fantasy Society Pub Quiz a try, where a variety of questions from the realms of Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Nerd-Adjacent and even general knowledge will be asked.
Teams will be made at the event, you don’t need to know anybody to compete.
Not the most traditional pub quiz, we made it more Game Show-y and hopefully more fun.

BOOK CLUB, Friday 19th October, 18:00 – 20:00, Dillon’s Coffee (in Gower Street Waterstones)
This week’s reading is a short sci-fi story about religion: ‘The Way of Cross and Dragon’ by George R. R. Martin http://www.lightspeedmagazine.com/…/the-way-of-cross-and-d…/

2. UPCOMING EVENTS
FILM NIGHT Truth or Dare, Monday 22nd October, 18:00 – 21:00, Medical Sciences G46

Here We Go Again!

Hey, I hoped y’all enjoyed your first week of sci-fi and fantasy events and are ready for a second jam-packed week! There have been some room changes so please pay close attention to the new locations for the events.

I would greatly encourage all of you to come along to the pub after these events (even if you find yourself unable attend the event itself, feel free to just come to the pub after 9pm!), they’re a great way of getting to know other freshers and members of the society. We usually go to the Institute Outside Bar (the one right outside the IOE), so join us there and don’t at all feel pressured to drink!

Final note: Use our forums! Our website boasts a great forum to let you guys discuss and argue nerdy topics to your heart’s content. If you’re not sure where to start, why not try to convince me to watch (or alternatively scare me off of watching) the original trilogy of Star Wars here: http://www.uclsffs.org/…/should-i-watch-the-original-star-…/

1. EVENTS THIS WEEK
FILM NIGHT Space Jam, Monday 8th October, 18:00 – 21:00, IOE 537
Bugs Bunny? Michael Jordan? According to my focus group, kids love both those things. Add in a meme-worthy soundtrack, significant product placement and an uncomfortably gender-swapped Bugs Bunny and what can go wrong?
A lot.

RPS TOURNAMENT, Tuesday 9th October, 18:00 – 21:00, IOE 739
Anybody want to prove to their friends that they’re the Michael Jordan of Rock, Paper, Scissors?
Anybody love the theatrics of the WWE but hate the actual athleticism?
Anybody want to prove to their friends that their time-tested strategy of “Always Go For Rock” never fails?
We have the event for you.
This night and this night only, we have THREE official UCL SFFS Championships up for grabs. THE SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP, the TAG TEAM and the NO HOLDS BARRED BELTS are ALL ON THE LINE!

BOARD GAMES, Wednesday 10th October, 18:00 – 21:00, IOE 784
Never heard of Settlers of Catan? Or play Twilight Imperium on the regular? Either way, feel free to come along; from rookie to veteran, all levels of board game experience are welcome. A selection of the society’s library will be available to play, with committee members available to demo or provide rules explanations as needed.

RPG ONE-SHOTS, Thursday 11th October, 18:00 – 21:00, Institute of Education Lobby
Ever dreamed of being a wizard? An orc? Buffy the Vampire slayer?
A werewolf? Now’s your chance.
A selection of individuals from our society will be running taster sessions to introduce you to the world of RPGs. These will cover a variety of roleplaying games from Dungeons & Dragons to Microscope to Fiasco.
Whether you haven’t heard of a dungeon nor a dragon or are an experienced player looking for new people to talk Owlbears with or make your own group, come on and try it out!

BOOK CLUB, Friday 12th October, 18:00 – 20:00, Dillon’s Coffee (in Gower Street Waterstones)
To
This week’s reading is ‘The Gig Economy’. All you need to know is that this is an intriguing lovecraftian story set in modern times.
Read online: https://zerohplovecraft.wordpress.com/…/…/the-gig-economy-2/

PICNIC, Saturday 13th October, 14:00 – 18:00, UCL Main Quad
This is your chance to start to get to know the members of UCL SFFS and an opportunity to make new friends over chips, avocados or whatever picnic people eat.
We’ll have an initial group of people meet at the quad and head to Regents Park, if you plan on coming after 2pm, you can find us via the live location we’ll be sharing on the Facebook Event page.
BYOFAB (Bring Your Own Food and Beverages).

2. UPCOMING EVENTS
PUB QUIZ, Thursday 18th October, 19:00 – 21:30, Print Room Café
